Before a firework was red, it was a strontium salt waiting for its moment.

Independence Day will have us looking to the sky, but much of what makes fireworks special has sources beneath our feet. The chemicals that cause fireworks to explode, burn in rich colors, and shower us with shimmery pops and crackles come from the world around us.
